This beautiful campus is the backdrop for many local film and tv productions, and was one of our most challenging and exciting jobs of 2013. At 285,000 square feet, this facility required a detailed work and safety plan to ensure the quickest turnaround time and workflow efficiency while adhering to worksafe standards and procedures.
The work was performed over summer break and posed unique access and job sequencing challenges, including operation of aerial lifts, working around the direction of the sun, maintaining strict site safety procedures, and a tight turnaround time before fall session began.
To overcome the specific project challenges, Imagines mandate was to collaborate with the BCIT faculty and the maintenance contract holder which led us to formulate successful and creative solutions. The result is a building that shines and gleams, befitting an Institute of Technology.
One of the most unique challenges was the 40,000 square foot aircraft hangar with 70′
floor to ceiling windows, full of demo aircraft and technical equipment. Our first question upon inspecting any site… “How are we going to gain access?” As the hangar was not fitted with an internal monorail system for rope access, the only safe option was to use 65′ and 100′ telescopic boom lifts. Not an easy task when working around hundreds of thousands of dollars of aircraft, technical equipment, and the buildings own mechanical features. The plan was to clear the hangar to allow access and the lifts were moved into place.
Another satisfying challenge was the cleaning of the curved stainless steel feature wall at the front entrance. Likely not cleaned since the building was completed in 2007, it was dull and covered in streaks and mineral runoff. Using a telescopic boom lift, air-aspirating low-pressure foam nozzles, and our proprietary building wash mixture, the wall came out looking as new as the day it was installed.
